Michael’s Story: A Journey of Loss and the Strength to Carry On
This past year brought unimaginable heartbreak for Michael.
While working for the power company, Michael was injured in an accident and hurt his back, hip and both knees. He had to take time off for medical reasons and then total devastation hit.
His daughter passed away—an unthinkable loss for any parent. Just as he was beginning to navigate that sorrow, his wife, his partner in life, also passed away from heartbreak. Two deep, soul-shaking losses, just months apart, left Michael reeling in a grief few could comprehend.
Amidst that emotional devastation, Michael faced another battle—his health. A serious medical condition required surgery, and though he followed protocol and had time off approved by his immediate supervisor, the company he had loyally worked for decided it wasn’t enough. Because it hadn’t been cleared through Human Resources, they terminated his employment. In the blink of an eye, Michael lost not just his job, but the insurance and financial security that came with it.
Physically, Michael is still in pain every day. His back, left hip, and knee have all been damaged to the point where he requires a pain pump to function—an expensive device that he cannot afford without support. With nowhere else to go, he now stays with a friend, doing his best to hold onto hope.
And yet, through it all, Michael has not given up.
Thanks to Mankind, he now has insurance. It’s a step forward. But his journey is far from over. Michael still needs help covering the high costs of his ongoing care, his pain management, and the basic needs that were lost when his world turned upside down.
