In July of 2024, Michael C., a seasoned retail store manager with over 30 years in the industry, was no stranger to hard work and dedication. But one morning, the familiar aches from his past sciatica flared up intensely, leaving him buckling over in pain. Concerned, he visited his doctor. After a series of tests, including an MRI and blood work, his PSA level came back at 10.89, a red flag for prostate cancer. The diagnosis was confirmed: stage 3 prostate cancer.
After visiting a urologist, his options led to surgery; doctors discovered four growths on his lymph nodes and a growth attached to his rectum. Determined, Michael began a treatment plan that included both medical and radiation therapy at UT Southwestern. Hecompleted four weeks of radiation, with just two more weeks.
Faced with physical, emotional, and financial challenges, Michael applied for Social Security benefits, but the process was slow and difficult. Throughout it all, he leaned on his faith in God for strength. He heard about additional support through UT Southwestern, and has a very positive attitude about his health journey and proudly wears his Mankind shirt to his Friday treatments.
