Derrick’s Story

A Story of Strength: Derrick F’s Journey

Derrick F. has spent most of his life giving his all to his work, dedicating 33 years to one company, pouring sweat and energy into his job day after day. The kind of dedication that only someone who truly believes in the value of hard work and the pride that comes with it can offer. But over the years, Derrick’s body began to feel the weight of that commitment. His back, once strong and resilient, slowly broke down under the pressure. What started as the occasional ache turned into something more persistent—a pain that no amount of rest could alleviate.

Six surgeries later, Derrick’s back became a part of his story, as much a part of him as the kindness he extends to those around him. Still, life kept throwing challenges his way. A car accident that should have never happened—a reckless driver running a stop sign, T-boning Derrick’s car at 45 miles an hour—changed everything. The accident left Derrick with permanent nerve damage to his legs, leaving him with a constant reminder of the fragility of life and the harsh reality of chronic pain. He fought back, like he always had, but the battle was far from over.

Every day, Derrick lives with the knowledge that pain is a companion that will never leave. Chronic pain is an invisible burden, one that many can’t see, but it’s there, always. On top of this, Derrick has battled with other health issues: AFIB, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea, which forces him to sleep with a CPAP machine each night. His body, once the vehicle of his strength, now demands constant care and attention. He’s learned to navigate a world that moves faster than his body can keep up with, but he does so with dignity and resilience.

The pain pump implanted in his back—a small piece of technology designed to offer him relief—has become a crucial part of his life. It’s something Derrick must tend to every 90 days, with refills that will increase as he ages, or if his body becomes immune to the medication. It’s a reminder that while technology can help, it cannot solve all of his problems. His health issues have forced him to retire at 62, much earlier than he had ever planned, and without the full Social Security benefits he had hoped for.

But through all the challenges, Derrick remains a man of deep strength, not just in body, but in spirit. His life has been defined by the ability to rise after every fall, to keep going when everything within him cries out for rest. Yet, the financial burden of his medical bills is a heavy weight to bear, something that no one should have to carry alone. The kind-hearted man who spent decades helping others is now in need of that same help.

As Derrick moves forward in his journey, he faces each day with courage and hope, despite the pain. His doctors, Dr. Timothy Selway and the pain specialists, have been critical in managing his condition, but their services come at a cost. Derrick’s battle is far from over, but he continues to inspire those who know him with his unwavering determination and the kindness that remains in his heart.

You helped, even in the smallest way, you are offering Derrick something he’s given to so many: a reminder that kindness and compassion can help lift someone in their darkest hours. For Derrick, it’s not just about the physical relief from pain—it’s the emotional and moral support that will help him carry on, as he has always done.
